Good morning 2007 This is slightly late in the day being posted, as I’d written it on Boxing Day. In fact, it’s a mish-mash of bits I’d written and edits made to that.

Well, well, well: yet again we find ourselves at the end of the year, slightly bored, slightly lonesome and at a loss as to what to do on Boxing Day. We have eaten far too much, from which the lethargy induced incarcerates us in front of our computers (formally the television set, may he rest in dusty piece in that now-disused corner of the living room) attempting to fill and kill time, until we all go back to work, study and play as our usual routines dictate.

I previously had written where this paragraph now stands a piece about how 2006 was particularly tumultuous. I’ve deleted it; it was a bit moribund, and, well, we all have bad years occasionally. But then I have high hopes for 2007, so why dwell so on the gloomy bits of past?

As I’ve been lazy posting recently, I’ve missed out on exciting things that’ve been happening, one particular event being the Selwyn Snowball. Amazing, simply amazing. I was lucky to have been involved (if only in a tiny capacity compared with the other members) with the committee, so I knew in advance what was going to be going on, yet I was still taken back at the execution of the plans and filled with awe at what had been achieved. As well as being a super-fun ball, it was a lovely trip with Anne across the country to Selwyn, and a chance to catch up with lots of friends there. All-in-all, pretty special. Look at the end of this post for photos of the frolics (or if you’re reading a feed of this, click on the link to the full thing). Or, in fact, just look on The Facebook at this album.

A quick run-down of the cultural things I’ve been doing. Before Christmas I also had the chance to see Patrick Wolf again (thank you Chris for being super and getting hold of those tickets!), and I wasn’t disappointed. This intimidating, clever character never lets your ears down for a moment, and hearing him play an acoustic set in the intimate venue of the Union Chapel, Islington really heaped on how beautiful an occasion it was. I’ve heard the new material before at some of his recent gigs, but hearing it again, and a little different in the acoustic arrangements, only goes to increase my longing to get hold of a copy of the new album when it comes out. More photos below. Another gig I went to was that of Matinee Club (formerly The Modern). Very electro, very addictive pop as it should be.

In terms of films, I have to make special mention of Pan’s Labyrinth for simply being the most visually spectacular film of the year, and with a plot that tugs and tugs the emotions in all directions—a must see, if ever there was one. Shortbus too was a good film, although I’m still not quite decided exactly what I think. The trouble is, I couldn’t see the point of the film. It is enjoyable, if only for stretching the imagination, and the humour too is at a good level. Worth a view, particularly fun to take someone to if you’d like to offend them to their very fibre.

Between Christmas and the new year had me travelling to Sheffield and York, courtesy of Anne and Matthew respectively, and thanks to them for lovely times! (And to Anne for showing me that oop noorth ain’t as scary as it looks sometimes… and for teaching me poker…)

I’m sorry for the rubbish post that this has turned out to be, I had so much more to write too! All best, &c. &c.
I was not chucking, but the photo amused me. More Selwyn Snowball photos on Facebook. I was not chucking, but the photo amused me. More Selwyn Snowball photos on Facebook.

So good! The lovely Patrick Wolf at the Union Chapel, Islington. So good! The lovely Patrick Wolf at the Union Chapel, Islington.
