To the lighthouse I said I’d bring tales of fun stuff, and so I will. I guess going in chronological order would be the most sensible way to proceed, so proceed I shall.

Hallowe’en this Monday heralded the long-awaited Samhain Spooktacular hosted by Mr Patrick Wolf, who we all know and love. No? Well, here’s his website, so check it out and fall in love with him. He started off the set gently and sombrely, building an atmosphere that matched the night on which he played. The stage was filled with pumpkin lanterns generously donated by fans; the fans also being an interesting spectacle by way of their appearance. During the supports, time was filled just working out exactly what some people had done with themselves…

With just Patrick (flitting between piano, ukulele and tiny guitar), a violinist, a drummer and an occasional synth player, it was an intimate affair. The gig paused near the end while the laptop was brought out for the last part and the music changed swiftly from the folky to the electro. Hearing Bloodbeat played live was an experience, without wanting to sound sycophantic, you really could feel the talent that this guy has. And he’s oh so pretty too. Gurgle. (Photos below.)

Following the excitement of Monday night was the massive Queen’s Ergo Competition. You what? Well, it’s basically where all the novice rowing teams in the university head over to Queen’s to compete in a 4km relay race. That’s more than 100 teams- this is one massive night. The buzz in the air is quite something- a mixture of trepidation and a desire to get it over with, and of course the desire to do well and see your boat push out in front of the others on the huge scoreboard that fills the end of the hall.

So, with about 12 or so teams in the heats, each of the eight members of the boat row 500m as fast as they physically can on the machines (ergs), often with vomituitous (that’s not a real word, but sounds good) results from just over a minute and a half of pure human exertion. The adrenaline rush is mad. I’m the complete antitypical sportsman- running for a train is far too much of an effort for me – but I did get a kick out of this. (And Selwyn as a whole did pretty well, so well done Selwyn boaties!) There’s a couple of photos below to look at. Apparently some are supposed to appear on the official website, so I’ll post a link if they ever materialise.

After that quite turmoil-laced last post of mine, I’m glad to report things are a bit happier this end after having spoken to people about things and sort of sorted some stuff out. Ta for the comments to the post too :)
