Huomenta!
A mad, mad past few days. Thursday morning, I was disturbed from a lovely lie-in after the BSP gig by a phone call. It was the phone call I've been waiting now literally months for. "Ben! We have a placement for you!". The next day, another phone call: "You're booked on a flight tomorrow afternoon, get packing!".
Well, as you can probably guess, I'm now off on my gap year adventure, in Helsinki. I'm not entirely certain what the company I'm going to work for do (http://www.fountainpark.com), but it'll be a good chance to put into practise the (very) limited Finnish that I have learnt.
Last night (my first here), my fellow Smallpeice students showed me the local highlights. In 5 minutes of being here, I've sensed that the Finns are a very respectable people, ultra-efficient, and little-speaking (it's oddly quiet and tranquil for a capital city). But that's just during the day- come evening, out comes the wallet and booze is consumed- in vast, vast quantities. They like drinking on the streets, and seem to have a thing for smashing bottles around them. Think Croydon is bad for that on a night out- come to Helsinki.
When Finns get drunk, they really get drunk. It's quite a strange sight, they lose inhibitions (they will even jaywalk under the influence- a practice normally holding a deep inate guilt if ever done) and become very talkative and friendly.
Anyway, enough of that taster for Helsinki for now, stay tuned for more Scandinavian sagas.
